Wireless Training Collar Review and Field Tests

As our new puppy started maturing, she gradually began to roam freely around the neighborhood. He’s not really an aggresive dog. Therefore, we never thought it would be a problem.

It works very well, given that the coverage patterns are circular and my yard is a triangle. The ability to focus or shape a coverage pattern for better distance in a specific direction would be awesome, as would more options on the collars and accessories.

Then, took the dog, put him on a leash, took him next to the flags, and so NO NO a couple of days. Then the third day, put the collar on him and openned the door. He got past that perimeter and jumped sky-high. He’s scared to death of getting zapped and he knows exactly what the score is. If he stays in the front and back yards, he’s fine, but if he gets outside the perimeter, he’s zapped. Our dog is a joy, cause we’re not ticked off all the time. We reward him with frequent trips to the dog park. And we can open a door without worry. This product works and is worth every penny.

Another added benefit is that now that the dog has learned to turn-around when he hears the beep, we take it with us when visiting our family out of town. We plug up the unit at their house, and the dog knows what to do when he wonders too far off.
If you ever move, just unplug it and take it with you. There’s no need to install new wire around your new home.

It is light enough to mount directly on drywall with no added support. The power cord is only about 6ft. long. So it will need to be relatively close to a power source. There are specific instructions included to help determine the most effective location to mount it.

I want to stress this point. This is not a quick fix to containing your pet, you must take the time to properly train your dog so they are aware of the boundaries and consequences. A pet who is not trained and simply sent out with the collar on is in danger of over “correction” and may run out of the boundary area and keep running, not understanding why they are being corrected nor how to make it stop. Owners must understand the principals behind proper pet training when using any shock collar.

The battery life has been good, better than expected although I picked up plenty of spares just in case. So far in a month of operation I’ve gone through one battery. That battery had a hard life since the dog that was using that collar did not care if he got corrected with the lower correction level or not so it was used with a higher setting than the other collar.

If I worked for Petsafe I would integrate these collars with a pet door receiver, so one collar on a pet would allow secure access in and out of the house and also provide containment.
