Is the Boxer Breed Really Hyperactive?

People keep hearing time and time again about hyper-active dogs, but a boxer that grows energetic and very active with each passing day is still a big cause for surprise for so many. To digress, the worst decision that can possibly be made later on is to assume that a hyper dog has no need for a regular amount of exercise in order to be happy and fit. Anyway, the point is that many pet owners looking for a boxer disregard the boisterous nature of a puppy, and wake up each day to a dog that requires far more effort than when it was still a puppy.

But is there really more to the boxer breed aside from the reputation for hyperactivity? Most boxers are playful, but the rest are also level-headed and not too tied to their temperament and dispositions, which means they are capable of adapting to their owner’s schedule, or spending quiet time in between play appointments, walks, and boxer dog training. On the other hand, a hyperactive dog’s love for fun kicks into overdrive when it finds its owner and surroundings too boring, and so starts looking for some way to burn off its energy and interest. Hyper boxers are capable of chewing into furniture, and are more likely to commit household accidents (sometimes leaving stains just practically anywhere in the house).

Boxers are a strong-willed breed, and obedience training can do much to keep such a nature in check from deteriorating into restlessness and-or hyperactive tendencies. A real hyperactive dog is a challenge to train, and it will take patience and effort on your part to help the dog have control over its own behavior. If you have a boxer puppy at home and think it is hyperactive, then the best way to reduce chances of it developing more alarming problems like aggression or destructiveness is to train it at a young age.

If you are ready to visit rescue centers or breeders to look for your future dog, ask for permission in order to spend some time examining and observing the boxer(s). Just by observing how one dog behaves when it is with its littermates, and also when it is alone, you can verify whether the dog is hyperactive or not. The parents of the litter will need scrutinizing as well, in order to be sure about hyperactivity in this line. Eventually, it all comes down to being responsible owners and the use of boxer dog training in order to manage successfully the dog’s imposing size and bursting energy, and in order to take control of any undesirable tendencies.

Puppy Crate Training 101

If you are someone who is away from home for several hours or more at a time, then crate training puppies is something you will definitely need to do with your dogs.  Crates are also nice places for your puppies and dogs to sleep in.  Crates can make den animals such as dogs and puppies feel secure and comfortable.

Placing the puppy inside a crate can also protect your house from potentially destructive behavior like chewing and urinating, as well as keeping him safe from potential dangers like electrical cords.

Since dogs usually won’t soil anywhere they sleep, crate training puppies can really be a big benefit. Crate training and house training, therefore, reinforce each other.

Crating a dog or puppy isn’t cruel at all as long as there is plenty of food and water in the crate and the animal isn’t left in there for long periods of time. If you can make the crate a place of safety, comfort and enjoyment, you will be successful with crate training puppies. Your dog will feel very comfortable if you put a blanket or towel inside for him to lay on. Drinking water should be in the crate whenever your puppy is crated.

Crate Training Puppies Basics

Your puppy should be introduced to his crate gradually. Never try to force him to go in, but tempt him with toys and treats If you put the treats or toys at the opposite end of the crate than the door, he will need to get completely inside to get them. When he goes inside his crate, give him lots of praise.

Puppies or dogs should not be punished by using a crate. Put the dog crate, if it is possible, in an area where the family spends a lot of time. Due to their very social nature, puppies and dogs don’t like feeling isolated. To get your puppy used to it, start crate training puppies for just a few hours while you are there. The crate is then not associated with being isolated.

Things To Keep In Mind When You are Crate Training Puppies

When crate training puppies there are several important things to remember. The first thing you need to remember is to never leave a collar on your puppy when he is in a crate unless the collar is a break away one. Otherwise there is a possibility that the collar could get stuck on something in the crate like the wire mesh or bars. Another thing you shouldn’t do is put a dog or puppy in a crate without providing him with sufficient water. To ensure that the puppy doesn’t soil the crate, be sure to take him out to go potty before crating him.

As previously mentioned, dogs really do not like to sleep in places they have soiled. If the puppy persists in soiling the crate, there are several explanations for this. One common cause in young puppies is that they do not have adequate bladder control.

He also may not have gone potty before being crate or maybe he drank a lot of water. It could be an indication that your puppy has a bladder condition or worms. Puppies that were kept inside a crate or cage at a pet store may be used to soiling inside their crate and therefore need some additional potty training.

Because dogs are actually den animals, crate training puppies is usually not very hard. As long as you make his crate safe, enjoyable and comfortable, your puppy will likely adapt to it quite easily. Just be certain that you do not use going inside the crate as a means to isolate him from the family or as a way to punish him.

Tips on Readying Boxers for Show Trials

Boxers are one of the most instantly recognized dog breeds nowadays, and it’s not only because of that worrisome look, or those trademark clipped ears! Boxers are also known for being lovable and loyal companions, aside from being sterling participants in show trials.

In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of events that seek to provide the most fun to the most broad range of dogs. Some of these involve both pure bred dogs and otherwise competing against each other, to more specific competitions between certain dog breed only, or up to only a certain type of dog. The boxer is an able contender in all these, their main asset being a bit of boxer dog training, but mainly their intelligence which is capable of holding a plethora of tricks and postures.

If you are raising a boxer and plan to show it in the future, bear in mind that some breeders actually start training dogs at 6 weeks, teaching the dog basic postures that come in handy during dog shows. The best sources of information on dog training are in the local dog clubs or kennel clubs. A registration in a kennel club will help a lot too in order for your dog to qualify for some event types. It also helps a lot to get your dog into the smaller shows organized by the clubs themselves, so that it can be prepared for the tension and the distractions that larger shows will present.

After investing the time and the effort for boxer dog training, the last major step prior to your dog’s day of reckoning is a thorough bath and grooming that at least makes it look like a champion. You yourself as dog trainer should choose an outfit that is in contrast to your dog’s coat color. On the day of the competition, make sure to arrive at the event’s venue with sufficiently enough time for the dog to settle down in such a new and huge place filled with many strange dogs. As you bring your dog to the judges so they can take a closer inspection, bear in mind that the judges will be looking at both your boxer’s profile and its head and mouth. Of course, the judges will take a look at your boxer numerous times during the event, but the first showing is always the most decisive since that is where most of the assessing is made. Be steady, calm and confident; if your dog senses you this way, it will think and act likewise.

Choosing the Best Dog Training Books

All dog owners really would love to have a well behaved puppy or dog that is always a great companion, and doesn’t have a bunch of behavior problems. No one wants a dog that is continually misbehaving or doesn’t listen to their commands. Some dogs are merely problem diggers or chewers or barkers, while other dogs may have problems with aggression. It is important to take the step of obedience training your dog if you are going to have a well behaved pet.

You should be sure to get yourself a copy of one of the great dog training books in order to learn the right way to obedience train your dog at home. The problem is  that without having a good understanding of the right dog obedience training techniques your efforts to train your own dog at home will very likely be frustrating and not as successful as you would like.

Professional dog trainers are very expensive, so it makes good financial sense to learn how to train your own dog at home. Not only is it fun watching your puppy or dog enjoying learning his new tricks but if you do the training the right way-using only the positive conditioning techniques that are taught by the best of the dog training programs-you will create a lasting bond of trust and confidence between you and your dog. The bond between you and your dog means that he will do his best to please you. Your dog will respect you as the pack leader, the Alpha dog, and follow your guidance rather than just do whatever please him.

How do you know which dog obedience training book is right for you? You may have already noticed how many different books there are on the Internet or in a book store about dog training. Naturally, some of these books are much better done, and offer quality step by step advice that really works.

The best dog training books all teach using positive reinforcement training methods. Don’t make the mistakes of older harsh methods using hitting or yelling at the dog in order to train it. That is because you may get your dog to sit by intimidating it, but you will not be creating the important bond of trust and confidence you need so that your dog eagerly looks forward to following your lead. The best dog training books teach you how to communicate with your dog in a language he can understand, so the training is easy for him to follow. Very often people make the mistake of talking to their dogs as if they were just a fuzzy four legged version of a human. A great dog training book teaches you what not to do, in addition to what you should do when you train your dog at home. Avoiding making mistakes while training your dog is almost as important as learning the steps of the exercises themselves. To get the best results, use the right training techniques right from the start, and apply them several times daily.

The Versatile Poodle: From Water Dog to Circus Dog to Companion

All dog breeds can lay claim to a certain purpose in life, all of which can fill in a role, helping their humans in some way. Similar to the case of many dogs, poodles have shifted and adapted to being companions, after being working dogs. And similar to the case of many dog breeds, the skills that made them a perfect fit for their occupations have been nicely applied to making them lovable and welcome house pets.

One of the oldest known work roles of the poodle, and most likely the task for which it was actually bred for, was as a water dog. Hunters would bring along the ancestors of the modern poodles, and the dog’s duty was to bring back the quarry that lands in the water. Today, the poodle’s coat in fact has a lot of similarities with that of the Portuguese Water Dog. Just like many hunting breeds, the poodle is also smart, and is very nimble with his feet. Thus even centuries ago, the poodle was already showing versatility as duck dog, or bait for fowl, or field hunting parter. With a little poodle training, the breed proved to be very up to snuff in these assignments.

The dog’s level of patience for and focus on hunting makes it the ideal companion to humans. But this also means that the dog makes a worthy assistant in the battlefield. Poodles have actually distinguished themselves in battles for saving courageously their masters from death and guarding army supplies. And poodles still have served in many other colorful occupations, such as using their good sense of smell to help their master look for edible fungi like truffle. Many experts also think that some poodle-like dogs may have helped herd livestock in the past.

Thanks to their wide array of skills and abilities, poodles are popularly known for being dedicated and loving family companions. They are good with children, and enjoy human companionship. They are also well-adjusted to other animals being with them at home. They love and are best simulated through play and standard poodle training, and can keep their family entertained even for hours. Lastly, this is a dog that can “read” into situations and the moods of its owners in order to know how to best please them, and praise and affection is the only thing it craves for.
